Stone wall build
A little time-lapse video of a stone wall build with a brick corner, I did the brick corner as I didn't have enough good stones to use for corners. Hope you like the video, sit back and enjoy!

Building a retaining wall & new labourer
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.14 дней назад
Building a retaining wall out of blocks and laying them on flat to make a 215mm wide wall. Mostly footage filmed using the GoPro on my head and featuring my new labourer who is helping for the next couple of months (hopefully!).
Porcelain patio time-lapse
Просмотров 56521 день назад
A quick video to show our method of laying a porcelain patio using the time-lapse on a camera. We lay on a 5-1 sand and cement bed and use a cement based primer on the back of the slabs. We also use a Rubi manual suction lifter to help lay the slabs.
Laying HEAVY trench blocks
Просмотров 542Месяц назад
Laying a few trench blocks from back in March when it was much wetter and colder. The trench blocks were soaked too so they were even heavier than normal which made for a tricky job.
How to join a new wall to an existing wall
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.2 месяца назад
A short video of how to join a new wall to an existing wall using stainless steel starter ties. This is the easiest way to have a strong connection to an existing wall and is much easier than using individual screw in ties.
Blockwork and expansion ties
Просмотров 4883 месяца назад
Getting some blocks laid on one of the few dry days we've had, having a good moan about the weather and looking at how expansion ties work. Also, the last video Ben the labourer features in as he's off to the army.

Stone wall/pillar to blend with existing
2nd video iv watched and nothing about how long we wait b4 floating
It says ‘drying times will differ depending on temperature’ so there’s your answer
Problem is the drying times differ so much depending on weather conditions, temperature and how damp the wall is. I know that’s not much of a help but plastering is such a wild beast 🤣. If you float and it’s moving the plaster on the wall it’s too wet but you don’t want to leave it too long where it’s dried too much
@@oxymoron5167 yes but it could say sine thing like the other reply and in certain conditions and wall types it is good to wait 30.40 60 mins
What thickness of subbase are you using?
Minimum of 100mm on this one. Always aim for at least that, ideally closer to 150mm.
What sort of stone do I need to use please?
I’d use sub base (can also be known as MOT type 1). If you want something for a final 25/50mm layer to fine tune levels then 20mm/dust can be used
What do I do now? I watched your video after I’ve already stained 65m of sandstone slabs with grout and the jet wash isn’t getting it off 😮
Don't use brick acid whatever you do. You could try this product: hardfloorrestoration.co.uk/product/hr-haze-remover-1l/
Great job one problem never butt them right against the wall
Why do you say that?
I will happily dog sit this honey ifs being a bossy foreman.
He’s seriously bossy and demands treats….
@@SamDaviesBuilder Sounds just like the little dog i have now. 🐶
they keep the day entertaining that's for sure
thanks for the tips, im a plasterer by trade about to lay a patio at home so youtube is my friend atm 😊👍👍
Thanks, glad the video helped 😃. I take my hat off to you plasterers
Not ready yet! The brick incident confirmed it for me. 😅
He was nailed on for a pass before that incident
@@SamDaviesBuilder he certainly was flying! But... almost doesn't count! Seems a good lad, book him a retest..
@@ryandoherty6174 I’ll get him booked in asap 🤣
Hi mate I’m taking out my internal door not leading to outside, can I just take it out and lay a bed of mortar on my floor boards? my house all the walls up stairs are breeze block on top of my floor boards, this is down stairs but under the carpet is floor boards with probably just breeze block on floor boards? Really appreciate any help mate
I’d always block off a solid base but if you have that upstairs then I suppose it’s no different. You’d have to make sure it’s a lightweight block though and not a dense block. You could make a stud wall if it’s just on top of floorboards?
@@SamDaviesBuilder thanks mate, I was thinking that but someone said it will be hollow, what do you think? Would be less work as I’m getting the room plastered and wound have to bond it out before plastering
@@Michael-wc1co you could use the blue plasterboard (sound deadening) which might sound less hollow and fill the stud with insulation
Wheelbarrow license test 😂 ... 🪪 I think his major was under pressure, so I reckon pass 😉 ... ✅
We all make mistakes under pressure 🤣
Ye he passed 😆
🤣🤣
Definitely a pass. He'll not make the mistake again, and will become a better driver because of it 😉
@@iainrutherford184 here’s hoping….🤣
Looks good 👍
Thanks 😃
Can you imagine if you ever had to get to your wiring or plumbing underneath that, it would be a nightmare.
Ever heard of a concrete patio? Imagine that
I think you’ve overthought this!
Same as any pipes underneath your house floor…. And also that’s what inspection chambers are for
Great "How to" video...well done Sir, well done indeed.
Thanks very much 😃😃
Muito bom
Thanks 😃🙏
Good video but next time ask the camera man to blow his snottery nose. 🥴
Ah I know, cameraman was sacked after this! P.S….you have great taste in cars going by the picture
Cracking job Sam. What a beautiful looking wall 👏🏼
Thanks. I love using reclaimed stone and bricks
I usually use the car washing sponges from b and q Sam . Never used those ones , good finish though.👍
Yea can’t beat the fine material on those sponges! I hadn’t seen the one I’m using until a friend had one, works well and saves your hands a bit
Now thats a stone wall.
😃😃 thanks
nice job dude
Thanks! 😃
no spacers or buttering the back of the slab with slurry
I don’t need to use spacers with these…I can get them perfect with a 12mm joint. You don’t need to primer this type of slab if you have a decent wet mix like this. However, if you’re laying porcelain then use spacers and use cement based primer on the back of the slab :)
What do you call the swiveling arm that holds the bricks up?
That’s called an ‘indispensable tool’. It’s a castor wheel off a trolley fixed to the oven floor and then a piece of wood attached to that. You can then fit a angle bracket to the end of it to help support the brick
Great job. What kind of metal clips you used so they can support heat? What are the dimensions so they can stay and support weight?
Not sure exactly what they were as they came with the BBQ kit but they were at least 100mm long (50mm into the brick and 50mm out) and 50mm wide. They were a galvanised metal so they don’t rust and didn’t bend easily, but I’m not sure sure the thickness
Excellent video thank you. I've seen where all my mistakes were in the past. Now i'll do a proper job thanks to you...
Thankyou, glad the video was of help to you!
Great video. What type of sand do you use?
Thanks. I use building sand although we don't have much choice of sand round here in West Wales. What would you be using the mortar for?
@@SamDaviesBuilder thanks for getting back. Repointing a sandstone patio.
@@Wayne-pb5zx I’d get a sand suitable for building/bricklaying. You don’t want a sharp sand as it’ll be too coarse
@@Wayne-pb5zx and there’s a few videos of repointing patios on my channel if you’d like to check them out

Well done on 10k mate, looking forward to the new pizza oven build series
Thanks, can’t wait to get stuck into the build!
Looks good brother
Thankyou 😃
@@SamDaviesBuilder Ofc!
Thanks a lot, pal. Good stuff!
Glad it helped! 😃
never seen blue engineering brick before ...
What part of the world are you in? Loads in the UK
@SamDaviesBuilder Scotland , av just never happened to come across blue bricks throughout my five years of bricklaying 😂
🤣🤣. They are a very good brick and soak in very little moisture, they are used a lot on plinth courses on houses or at the bottom of garden walls. Nightmare to lay in the winter as they take ages to go off as they don’t draw the moisture out of the mortar like other bricks
Dode.cosigo era.herramienta
I got mine from eBay second hand
The arrows on the back of the tiles are there for the factory to calibrate their systems. If at quality check there is a discrepancy in the cut edge of tile the arrow will indicate which part of the cutting process is faulty. Nothing to do with laying direction of slab, although you can of course follow the arrows if you wish.
So do you mean if there is an arrow there is a faulty cut edge?
What mix of cement?? 👍
4:1 sand and cement with plasticiser
How do you maintain the pointing gap, and at what width? I'm going your way with my rivens!.... I think 🤔🫠😆
I just do them by eye but when I started out I used 12mm ply cut into strips as a spacer. You’ll be fine following my way… a good mix is key!
@SamDaviesBuilder great! I've made a gap bar out of old wood. It's about 11/12mm too. Friday is the big day. Thanks for the video and replies.
@@ryandoherty6174 no problem at all. If it’s really warm, don’t do too much at once. Once you get a feel for it you can do more of an area at one time
@SamDaviesBuilder I see. If it gets roasting, I could do it in the evening when the sun goes down, maybe. Looking at your mortar mix and a couple of others on here, it seems like patience is the trick. Let it mix.....
@@ryandoherty6174 yes patience is key, let me know how it goes
Cracking job Sam. So therapeutic watching 🫣. All the very best with breaking in the trowel and young Danny 😊
Thanks 😃. It’s great to have a young labourer that is keen back on the scene!
Beautiful work as always buddy. The quality on the video is amazing. I can see that lovely mortar in all its detail. That is a very long retaining wall. And this vid is perfect timing as I’ll be starting the blockwork for my wall in a few weeks. Nice to see you’ve got a new helper. Hope he’s eager to learn from a master! Are those wall ties for the concrete to cure around to grip onto the blockwork? And that footing for it looks like a monster. What dimensions is it? Got to be 400mm deep like mine.
Thanks! New GoPro so that explains the better quality. Yea Danny is turning out to be a quick learner but he’s going into the motor trade in September. Ties are to grip into the concrete backfill yea, just to tie it all together a bit more. I didn’t do the foundation but that is a huge pour and at least 400mm like you say, it was because when they dug out the first bit it was lower than the house next doors shallow foundations. I think the guy that did the shuttering and pour was glad to get that concrete in before any movement happened!
Nice job Sam you are gone back to Marshalltown i see.
@@brickbybric Yea, sadly both those Bon trowels broke on the handles so they exchanged the last broken one for the Marshalltown. I need to break it in now though as its like using a shovel!
@@SamDaviesBuilder the Bon trowels are forged in Slovenia Sam ,but from what I’ve heard they are shipped to the u.s.a with out handles . So the handles may be sourced in china and may not be the best quality if they are splitting like that .
@@brickbybric from what RhinoBuild said I was just very unlucky 🤣. (Or heavy handed!!)
Could you tell me please what trowel your using. I'm taking up plastering, I don't know any plasterers and talking to DIY / building suppliers etc they can't tell difference between a finishing trowel and what your using and their selling the bloody things lol Any help would be greatly appreciated..👍👍 I was given a marshall town 14" extralite permashape finishing trowel by a neighbour who bought but then never used it. Is this any good or is it to flexible...
Are you rendering or skimming? The trowel you’ve been given will be fine for rendering! Sometimes you’d want a more flexible trowel for internal skimming but for outside that will do you fine, it certainly won’t be too flexible in my opinion
@@SamDaviesBuilder Sam thank you for your reply. I'm rendering, using hp12 base coat then a top coat for pebble dashing..Just this morning a builder/plasterer stopped while I was making a mix and he said exactly what you said when I asked about trowels. He's using the same trowel I have the marshall town. Told me to keep my mix like cream and do two coats a thin first one and then a thicker one to bring it up to the 13mm I'm putting on. So again thank you buddy and my very best wishes 👍👍👍👍
@@davidbuchanan3374 no problem at all, all the best with your project
@@SamDaviesBuilder Thank you pal. It's people like you willing to share your knowledge and skill set that allows amateurs like me to build the confidence to tackle work like this. Very best wishes to you and your's buddy👍👍👍
@@davidbuchanan3374 😃😃 thanks
"Not foamy enough - needs more Fairy Liquid!" ~ Every 'builder' in the North East. On the upside you can drill the mortar with a wood bit instead of an SDS! Then the heavy bird box falls off.
🤣🤣 yea and 30 mins mixing. About summarises the quality of mortar on the big house builder sites
An impeccable builder, though not quite a maestro in the kitchen, unfortunately
I don’t think my pizza skills will ever catch up with my building skills 🤣
Wouldn't recommend leaving a perimeter gap in bedding material as this prevents a 'backstop' for grouting and would lead to grouting failure over time. Always best to have the full bedding throughout. No gaps.
Yea I know what you’re saying, I leave a slight gap so when I tap the slab down the mortar has somewhere to move into and closed the gap up
This the same with normal garden slabs
Yea these are just your standard garden slabs
@@SamDaviesBuilder just got my first house never done something like this and wanted to test myself any tips
@@BradJamie-zz3pf just ensure you dig out so you can get minimum 100mm of sub base (mot type 1) in and compacted and then lay your slabs on a 30-40mm mortar bed (5 parts sand 1 part cement with plasticiser). Make sure you get the mix right, there’s a few videos on how to mix on my channel. Any more advice just ask
what size pad is that please in need a 7mx4m pad in my garden
Not sure exactly but it wasn’t far off your measurements
Looks too big oven for pizza
Oven size is fine 😃
Where’s the bbq🤔🙄
Full video is on my channel 😃
Hello . 1. Did you use special treated brick or is regular clay brick okay? 2. Where can I find those printed instructions you’ve got in your hands? Thanks
I used an engineering brick but I’m sure clay brick is fine if you are just using charcoal. The instructions came with the BBQ kit I bought. What part of the world are you in?
@@SamDaviesBuilderwhere did you get the BBQ kit do you have a link? I'm on the UK

You should slurry the bottom of the slap first as it bonds to the cement way better
No need on concrete slabs like this if you use a mix like I do. However it won’t harm if you do primer them. Porcelain and natural stone must be primered
